Blending Business Competencies with Technical Studio and Design Classes

The Kentucky School of Craft (KSoC) is a new professional craft school that aspires to become a national and international model for craft education as part of community development, exemplary in its programs and outcomes. With its innovative curriculum, the KSoC produces skilled artisans knowl-edgeable in the rich traditions of design and expert craftsmanship. Through its integrated courses in business management, marketing, and professional practices, the KSoC has blended business compe-tencies with technical studio and design classes. The teaching is hands-on and experiential, actively woodwork with a latheinvolving the aspiring craftsperson in new technologies along with traditional and contemporary materials and processes. Douglas Harling, master artisan in jewelry/metalsmithing, and David Wright, master woodworker, are offering the program’s first two AAS degree options in jewelry/metals and wood/furniture design. 

Located in Hindman, Kentucky, a small town in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, the Kentucky School of Craft is a part of Hazard Community and Technical College’s Professional Studio Artist (PSA) degree program through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. The PSA program prepares individuals for careers as independent studio artists and business owners, designers, performers and studio technicians. The curriculum offers technical, design, product development, and performance classes in a variety of disciplines coupled with business, marketing, and management courses. Class work covering the history and traditions of each discipline, basic studio development, and technology requirements are a vital part of the student’s education. Students com-plete an option of study and acquire the necessary technical proficiencies, creative problem solving, business skills, production processes, and the knowledge to apply these aspects to careers in the craft, music, theatre, or applied arts fields.
