School of Craft and Design & Southern Virginia Artisan Cente

turning clay on the wheelIn 2003, when Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) was invited to become a member of CraftNet, its School of Craft and Design was still on the drawing boards. In five years, however, the school has gone from a plan on paper to a facility with eight talented artisans, offering a quality craft program unlike any other community college in Virginia.

The PHCC School of Craft and Design offers seven career studies certificate programs that prepare students for employment in the craft of their choice. Each program includes three to five hands-on courses to learn the craft. An artisan entrepreneurship class helps provide the student with the skills needed in operating a business as well as presenting portfolios to potential employers. One- to three-day specially designed non-credit workshops in individual crafts also are offered. The school’s crafts instructors, as well as internationally recognized artisans, conduct these workshops. The School of Craft and Design now offers courses in the following programs: fine woodworking, woodturning, decorative painting, pottery, quilting, stained glass, jewelry making, and weaving.

The Southern Virginia Artisan Center opened in 2005, offering local and regional artisans a new outlet to showcase and sell their original artwork, including folk art, photography, paintings, quilted artwork, jewelry, pottery, stained glass, decorative handmade baskets, and furniture pieces that are functional and useable art.

For more information, please contact or visit the Southern Virginia Artisan Center, 35 West Church Street, Martinsville, Virginia 24112. Telephone 276.632.0066. You may also visit the facility’s website.  For more information about Patrick Henry Community College, please visit www.ph.cc.va.us.
